Resumen

En 2019, la nota principal en Indonesia fue el triunfo de Joko Widodo —personaje conocido simplemente como “Jokowi”— en las elecciones presidenciales de este año, con lo cual el popular ex alcalde de Yakarta consiguió un segundo mandato que le permitirá encabezar aquella nación insular del sureste asiático hasta 2024. Como ocurrió en 2014, Jokowi se alzó con la victoria electoral tras imponerse otra vez a su rival de hace cinco años, el general Prabowo Subianto, al final de una contienda desgastante que amenazó nuevamente con polarizar a la sociedad indonesia. Sin embargo, en esta ocasión Jokowi ha procurado impulsar de inmediato una reconciliación nacional a fin de superar las diferencias con sus adversarios políticos en pro de fortalecer la unidad del país al integrar a Prabowo en su gabinete, pues el presidente considera fundamental fortalecer el Estado indonesio no sólo para mantener el impulso de su programa reformista sino también para hacer frente a los desafíos del país, entre los que se encuentra la persistencia de la amenaza terrorista y el resurgimiento de los anhelos separatistas en la provincia de Nueva Guinea occidental. En esta nueva oportunidad para lograr su intención de modernizar Indonesia, Joko Widodo enfrenta además tiempos de incertidumbre pues, si bien la economía de Indonesia ha crecido de manera constante durante los últimos años, el país ya avizora los efectos de la guerra comercial entre los Estados Unidos y China en medio de un escenario de presión sobre las finanzas nacionales; luego de que la reforma fiscal impulsada por Jokowi no ha conseguido fortalecer las arcas del Estado indonesio, las inversiones no han llegado al país en la proporción esperada por el gobierno y los gastos corrientes consumen buena parte del presupuesto nacional. No obstante, la popularidad de Widodo sigue siendo muy elevada, en tanto gran parte de la población indonesia está satisfecha con la gestión presidencial de tal personaje y esta percepción positiva brinda un margen de maniobra considerable a Jokowi para comenzar su segundo periodo como líder de Indonesia.
