Abstract
Malaysia is currently undergoing a phase of uncertainty, both domestically and internationally. On the domestic front, the country’s positive economic performance is not assured, jeopardizing the Malaysia Madani project announced by Anwar Ibrahim to address major socio-economic problems. On the other hand, Anwar Ibrahim’s appointment as prime minister has not resolved the existing differences between the various factions of the Malaysian political class and the prime minister's supporters seem disillusioned, adding to the feeling of uncertainty. In the international arena, the government’s position is contradictory: while proclaiming neutrality in the Sino-American dispute it still privileges relations with the People’s Republic of China, despite the risks posed by the Chinese presence in the South China Sea. Restoring relations with Singapore is not enough to counterbalance China’s growing influence.
